Zirin, Dave. “An Economist Explains Why College Athletes Should Be Paid.” The Nation. 27 Mar. 2015. Web. 23 Feb. 2016.
The article argues that student athletes should be compensated to play their sport in college. Zirin is correct in this statement because of the way he uses the word compensate and not paid. Man would disagree with the idea of athletes being paid an annual salary, since it is not considered a job; however, the word compensated changes the connotation of the act and makes it seem more fair in the eyes of those who disagree.
Mogul, Robert G. “Salary Discrimination in Professional Sports.” Atlantic EconomicJournal 9.3 (1981): 106-110. ProQuest. Web. 18 Feb. 2016.
This article states that racism in not as prevalent in athletics when it comes to paying athletes. Mogul would argue that in today’s world, athletes that are of color are not discriminated against and therefore if they were paid in college there wouldn’t be any discrimination. Mogul is mistaken because although his studies were not conclusive that there is salary discrimination, there were still traces of it.
“Should NCAA Rules be Changed to Allow Intercollegiate Athlete.” Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance 66.9 (1995): 10. ProQuest. Web. 18 Feb. 2016.
The argument that this article makes is that student athletes should be paid to play. The Journal of Physical education gives examples that support and negate this. The argument that the journal supports is correct based upon that the reasons given in support are more fact-stating than the reasons against.
